QUICK READ: DALGONA COFFEE

Stay home. Wash hands. Rinse. Repeat.

You don’t have to convince me to try a new and unique form of coffee when I am, like you, staying in & staying home. I am not getting my daily [totally and completely basic] Starbucks grandé caramel frappuccino, venti ice, double blended, no whip with extra drizzle— so I am down for an alternative.

I don’t enjoy a regular hot cup of Joe, although I truthfully wish I did: it’s something that can be made at home with ease. I just prefer something cold, whipped, sweet, and blended with a slight hint of caramel: something that can’t be made at home with ease. Is that too much to ask? I’ve clearly put myself into this fancy can’t-make-at-home drink predicament I’m in.

WHAT IS DALGONA COFFEE?

Recently there’s been a drink taking the internet, and people at home, by storm. Dalgona coffee originated in South Korea and requires only three ingredients that you most likely have at home right now.

  • Instant coffee
  • Sugar
  • Hot water

When I say you likely have the ingredients in your kitchen right now, I mean it; unlike cooking shows that assume we all have plantains, flounder and persimmon on hand. Instant coffee is generally a basic, there’s a tap for that [water] and there’s a giant bag of sugar leaking tiny crystals somewhere in a cupboard.

The internet says Dalgona coffee is a beverage made by whipping equal proportions of instant coffee, sugar and hot water until it becomes creamy and then adding it to cold or hot milk.

Sounds sweet, sounds easy, and sounds like it could replace my local barista.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

  • Combine 2 tablespoons of instant coffee, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of hot water in a medium mixing bowl. Whip the mixture using an electric mixer or whisk by hand until it is light brown and fluffy. It should hold a stiff peak when the whisk is removed.
  • I served the whipped coffee creation over cold milk, but you can certainly heat the milk if you want. Spoon the frothed coffee mixture on top and smooth out with a spoon. Mix well before sipping.
  • Enjoy as frequently as you see fit!

Its like I put my cappuccino down, flipped it and reversed it. This whipped coffee is the 👏🏻 best 👏🏻 thing 👏🏻 ever 👏🏻! It’s as delicious as it is beautiful. If you don’t take 16,865 photos of it- did you even really make it?

K gtg break up with Starbucks. Enjoy! xx
