QUICK READ: POM-POM SORT

It’s raining. It’s pouring. We can’t go outside— and that’s boring.

We’ve been focusing on Bodhis colours, numbers and developing fine motor skills any chance we get, and I discovered this insanely easy and fun ‘pom-pom sort’ to help with all of the above.

I found a bag of leftover pom-poms I had from Bodhi’s first birthday when I hand-made 25 party hats 🙊 [glue gun burns are permanent] and haven’t used them since. Today was the day.

For this super simple [yet loaded with learnings] activity, you only need three things:

  1. Various coloured pom-poms
  2. Muffin or cupcake tray
  3. Tongs

I popped a single pom-pom, each a different colour, in separate sections of the cupcake tray [so Bodhi would know where to put the rest of the pom-poms] handed him tongs and let him have at it. You could also cut circles out of coloured sheets of construction paper to match the poms— and place those into the bottom of the tray for easy reference.

I initially helped him with the tongs because the metal piece that slides down to lock them in place, kept sliding down— I eventually took this piece off so he had better control. He quickly got a handle [literally] on how to use the tongs, and this is great because it will help develop the strength and coordination he needs to eventually cut with scissors, grasp a pencil, and write.

With a few instructions, he knew what to do. He began picking up the pom-poms with the tongs and putting them with the proper colour-family. We celebrated when he got it right and that motivated him even more. He was so proud of himself and even stopped to clap.

This activity kept him busy for 30-40 minutes, we just kept emptying the tray and starting over. When he woke up from his nap, he wanted to do it again. He played independently for another half hour or so: sorting, dumping the tray and repeating.

We had different shades of green and orange poms, which was a bit of an “a-ha” moment when he realized they go together in the same section. Overall Bodhi gave this activity a 10/10! I imagine it’ll be something he will continue to explore.
